Citadel update [Feb. 16th, 2013|09:48 am]

In his most recent post, Kerodin brags about all the attention the project has gotten from around the world. He neglects to mention the fact that such attention has involved laughter.

Apparently a government in Texas has contacted him to create another Citadel in that area. He wisely doesn't point out just where in Texas, probably hoping to avoid the media portraying the huge vibes of WE DON'T WANT YOU HERE that was coming out of Benewah County, Idaho.

"And with local .Gov support, many hurdles immediately drop away."

That's right, the government-is-evil group is considering working with the government to set up a new Citadel. Getting in bed with the dark side, are we? And that government is going to clear away hurdles. What hurdles would that be? Those nasty regulations and licenses others need to accommodate before they can build? Help for which they'll expect nothing in return?

Also, if this idea is taking America by storm, you'd think the blog would be inundated with comments. Not so much.

In my last job for City government, I worked extensively with the building permits/planning and inspection group. It's amazing how much work and how many departments something like a site plan has to go through before they can break ground. I wonder if these Citadel people have any idea how much infrastructure is required, or how much those permits are going to cost?

It's either a total scam, or they think since they own the land that they can just start popping up houses. Heck, they couldn't even pour concrete for RV pads without permits.

All I know about that sort of thing is my one planning act course in law school. We did study subdivisions, though, and the enormous amount of obligations that had to be fulfilled. And on a much smaller note, seeing the enormous list of requirements when all you wanted to do was sell your house. So if this is a sincere effort, no one knows what the hell they're doing.

But, yeah, I'm convinced this is a scam.

I'm not even convinced it's a scam, per se. I think it's some teenage wet-dream no-liberals-allowed treehouse fantasy, where they can all sit around and agree that they did a great job of saying "f you" to all government, everywhere. I would simply LOVE to see it develop into that, and to observe the inevitable decline into civil war resulting from the failure to think past the fist night's campfire.
