ACE changed their minds! [Apr. 14th, 2007|08:06 am]
I got the written confirmation that they didn't want book three on Tuesday. It was dated February, mind, but that's when I got it. The very next day, I get an email from my agent, saying good news, the numbers have gotten better and they'd like to know if I'm willing to have another book deal with them.

So, I'm totally shocked, of course, and pretty disbelieving, because why would the numbers be bad in February but good a month later? But I say yes, of course, and over the past two days I've been emailing with the editor about deadlines and stuff, so it seems, yes, it's a go.

It felt weird to me, like I was following the script of a sit-com, bad news one day, good news the next. But I'm still a total novice in this industry and don't know much about it. I really really really have to get more informed. I'm going to buy Publishing for Dummies or something this weekend. Because I've got no clue.

Anyway, I really wish I could think of some purply sparkly font to shout out thank you to all the people who wrote to ACE. (Without engaging in annoying capslock.) Because I can't help thinking that had an effect. To think of people, strangers, writing on my behalf was enough to make me feel honoured and proud and awed. That it had an effect on the publisher, wow, that's amazing.

The manuscript has already been mailed. As soon as I know the release date for book three, it'll be announced here and on my site. And I'll still put up snippets, because I like that idea.

Thank you!

Congratulations! I look forward to reading it.

You might want to think about hanging out over at making_light. It's run by Teresa and Patrick Neilsen-Hayden of Tor, and there's a lot of publishing-related discussion there. Right now they're having a lively discussion about sleazy vanity publishers (again -- this is a hot topic), and I've learned a lot about how legit publishing works just by noticing what people call outrageous and unacceptable.

Maybe a lot of your fans who read your journal have been doing advertising! I'm glad I get to read the third book, too :) Congratulations on this victory and may the publishers NEVER change their minds again!

HURRAY!!!! I can't believe it! Publishing is a fickled business I suppose! Can't wait for the next installment...I have a theory that Karish quite likes Lee a lot but I'm willing to wait...hopefully not too long!

Well, I didn't go as far as emailing ACE, I told my cats why there would be no more books, They fixed it.

This is how I also managed to get a book out of Juliet Marriler that wasn't the Bridei Chronicles last year.

My cats can fix anything, But I suppose. I do read to them, No book for me, means no storytime for them. (And before I sounds like a sad Cat lady, My two cats bug me when I'm reading until I talk to them.)

Congratulations on Book Three!

This is fantastic, and yes, you did have an effect. You became visible to them instead of one more ho-hum writer. As you said, your sales popped up, and between the letters and people voting with their dollars, you changed your writing future.

Why did things turn around? The only reliable means of advertising: word of mouth.

Again, congratulations on getting Book 3 out, and I hope your readership grows as the people who believe in you tell more people and more people about your books.

I'd stopped checking here as I was too depressed after seeing that Book 3 wasn't coming out and now it is - hurrah! I know this message is a bit late but even so, great work everyone who campaigned to get this book out and congratulations Moira on having publishers who've finally seen sense! Do you have any idea when I'll be able to buy the book (amazon.co.uk)?

Incidentally, I see that heaps of people say they found the series via Amazon's recommendations service - do you think ACE could have seen that happening and changed their minds as a result?
